Categories and tags
How posts are filed, why the taxonomy should stay small, and what it drives on the public blog.
Taxonomy is how posts are filed: one category, and any number of tags.
Categories
A category is the primary shelf a post sits on, and it appears in navigation and in URLs on some themes. Keep the list short. Five categories a reader can hold in their head beat twenty that overlap.
Tags
Tags are for cross cutting themes: a topic that appears across categories. They are cheap to add and easy to overgrow.
What taxonomy drives
- Category and tag pages on your blog.
- Related reading at the end of an article.
- Filtering in the Content workspace.
- Grouping in analytics.
Assignment
Posts are categorised and tagged during drafting, against your existing taxonomy rather than by inventing new terms per article. You can change either in the editor's SEO and taxonomy panel.
Settings
The taxonomy itself is managed under Content, then Taxonomy. Renaming a term updates the posts filed under it. Deleting one leaves the posts and removes the shelf.
