Revisions
What a saved version records, what the plan's per post revision allowance actually meters, and why those are two different things.
Two different things are called revisions, and confusing them leads people to believe they cannot keep editing. They are separate, and only one of them is metered.
Saved versions
Saving a post in the editor writes a snapshot to its revision history, and the revision panel lists them with what changed.
Recording the snapshot is a second step, taken after the article itself is saved. If that second step fails, the article is still saved and only the history entry for that save is missing.
The editor reports the save as successful, which it was, and does not flag the missing entry. A gap in the revision list is the only sign, so if history matters to you for a particular edit, check the list rather than assuming the entry is there.
The per post revision allowance
The number your plan states, shown in Settings under Usage, meters something else: regenerating a post through the pipeline.
Each regeneration counts against that post's allowance. The charge is reserved when a regeneration starts and committed only when a draft is actually persisted, so a run that fails does not consume one. Two simultaneous regenerations of the same post cannot both pass.

What a saved version covers
The article: title, body, metadata and structure. Not your asset library, your knowledge, or the post's analytics, all of which live outside the post and are not rolled back with it.
A Free Project is a different case, and not a smaller cap. AI article regeneration is a paid-only feature, so a Free Project has none at all: the request is refused with an upgrade prompt rather than a quota message. Editing and saving still cost nothing, exactly as they do on every plan.
